Virtual reality (VR) training has been shown previously to improve intraoperative performance during part of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of proficiency-based VR training on the outcome of the first 10 entire cholecystectomies performed by novices.
Thirteen laparoscopically inexperienced residents were randomized to either (1) VR training until a predefined expert level of performance was reached, or (2) the control group. Videotapes of each resident’s first 10 procedures were reviewed independently in a blinded fashion and scored for predefined errors.
The VR-trained group consistently made significantly fewer errors (P = .0037). On the other hand, residents in the control group made, on average, 3 times as many errors and used 58% longer surgical time.
The results of this study show that training on the VR simulator to a level of proficiency significantly improves intraoperative performance during a resident’s first 10 laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

A new optimization framework to maximize the performance and efficiency of morphable many-core accelerators is proposed. The devised methodology supports the co-existence of multiple optimization goals and constraints (e.g., computational performance, power, energy consumption and runtime reconfiguration overhead) by relying on a design space exploration approach based on a convenient adaptation of a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm. In accordance, the proposed algorithm allows the generation of a comprehensive set of execution plans, specifically targeting an efficient runtime adaptation of the processing elements instantiated in morphable slots of the processing structure. The conducted experimental evaluation shows significant gains in terms of the attained performance and energy efficiency when considering both highly parallel and data dependent applications, achieving peak power dissipation and energy consumption reductions as high as 54% and 45%, respectively.
Abstract
Understanding of the turbulent exchange processes between the ocean and the overlying atmosphere is essential for
wind shear and turbulence structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL). This is highly relevant for
the development of offshore wind projects with respect to the expected power output and acceptable structural loads
and fatigue of turbines. This paper presents preliminary results from a recent field experiment off the coast of
Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Turbulent fluxes have been measured from both a discus buoy and the Air Sea
Interaction Tower (ASIT). Using the correction algorithm of Edson et al. (1998) the buoy data are corrected and
compared with the ASIT measurements. The comparison shows that the corrected fluxes measured from the mooring
are in good agreement with measured fluxes from the tower and that the direct covariance flux method is applicable
for offshore turbulent flux measurements
