Abstract
Thisstudyexploresarchitecturaldesignbyexaminingair, fluidmechanics,andthenaturalventilation
of buildings.Inthiscontext,thisresearchintroducesanewwayofdealingwiththeprocessof
architecturalsynthesis.Theproposedwaycanbeusedeithertocreatenewarchitecturalprojectsor
to rethinkexistingones.Thisstudyissupportedbypreviousinvestigationintothenaturalventilation
of buildingsviacomputationalandlaboratorysimulation(Stavridou,2011; Stavridou andPrinos,
2013). Theinvestigationintothenaturalventilationofbuildingsprovidesinformationanddatathat
affectarchitecturaldesignthroughvariousparameters.Theparametersofarchitecturalsynthesis
thatareinfluencedanddiscussedinthispaperarethefollowing:(i)inspirationandanalogical
transfer,(ii)initialconceptionofthemainideausingcomputational fluiddynamics(digitaldesign),
(iii)developmentofthemainideathroughan investigatoryprocesstowardbuildingform
optimization,and(iv)formconfiguration,shapeinvestigation,andothermorphogeneticprospects.
Thisstudyillustratestheeffectofnaturalventilationresearchonarchitecturaldesignandthus
producesanewapproachtothearchitecturaldesign process.Thisapproachleadstoaninnovative
kindofarchitecturecalled “breathingarchitecture.”
